I thought this was really a fantastic piece of fabric from the turn of the century in Irish linen and still with the original paper label in unused condition. I am always amazed at the wonderful antique and vintage items that still can be found today from long ago. Many still in pristine condition such as this piece of linen yardage.

A wonderful find from an old dressmaker shop, this incredible yardage is still tied with the original cord and still bears the original label ~ and what a beautiful label! It is 16 yard of incredible Irish linen in a dress weight so fashionable then as it would be today......

There are many sources of antique and vintage items for the artisan and crafter to purchase who use old in the making of their new product. Some of those products include antique and vintage textiles of which is my field of expertise. There are many beautiful pieces of cloth which are damaged and can no longer be used as they are. So it is wonderful to see new creations with the old. As it is, many such pieces are one of a kind. And thus, creating tomorrow's heirloom.

So I have created a short picture showcase of textiles and related items that might give inspiration.

A group of vintage hand made silk ribbon rosettes. Late Edwardian - 1920's. Rosettes or flowers such as these were used for millinery hat trim, dresses and lingerie. Still, many of these lovelies found their way into the 1920's boudoir to decorate bedspreads, pillows & pictures frames as well as an assortment of vanity items ~ powder puffs, mirror backs, vanity trays, trinket boxes, pin keeps to name a few. The 1920's was a height of elegance and these beauties certainly showed it.

Antique & vintage instruction books for making crochet, knitted and embroidery items were many homemaker's "must" from the Victorian era through today. Books such as the above are a great resource of the fashionable then but also can be a great revival today.

The Bakelite belt buckle or slide. Ever so popular during the 1930's and 1940's. I see fun things done with these today.

And yes, there is fabric ~ from all era's! Great for quilting, restorations or reproduction sewing. This neat piece (with its original label) dates from 1915 - 1930. It was a type of fabric used for shirting.

1940's red seersucker fabric and what a kick! A top hats and canes print!

Laces ~ so beautiful and so useful! This lovely piece dates from the early 1900's

Vintage patterns are, oh so collectible! And why not? Still so usable! Here's a little sweetheart of a pattern of a child's bonnet!

This is just a small sampling of findings. For more information on any of these items or similar items I invite you to please visit me here or still more here

Do you like to sew? Or create new items from antique & vintage textiles? I am sure I would receive many yes answer to this question.

Today "creating from old" has developed into a sizable cottage industry. It has afforded many stay-at-home mothers a means of earning extra cash as well as launching others into a full time business. For a time, I have been on the outside edge of this industry as a supplier by help finding and selling to these artisans to produce their wares. Many of these items produced are one of a kind. Most notably, in the past I worked with teddy bear artists. It was truly a joy to see their critters come alive ~ and I always marveled at the skill of their creation.

The making of teddy bears is only one small part of this large industry. Many others are skilled in the making of quilts, sewing reproduction era clothing for adults and children. The making of dolls and clothing is a category all of its own. The list is large as it is varied. I am sure many of you can add your own to this list.

So to whet the appetite here are a few antique and vintage treasures that could possibly find new uses.

A great turn of the century cotton fabric in a white with tiny black print. This type of design / fabric is called "neat" and was used mainly for aprons and everyday clothing. You will find fabric of this type used over and over again in quilts also. And it is always a "neat" little design to the fabric.

A fantastic old store find from the 1920's! All these machine appliques are still attached to the cloth backing from the factory. The only one shipping tag on the end of the backing cloth indicates these beauties were made in Switzerland.

Want to see these appliques or other laces, trims, ribbon, buttons and sewing notions? I am sure there will be something to please. Why not take a look here .

As a little extra bonus here is a sweet late Victorian small traveling sewing case complete with a few necessary tools and notions. This darling size would be a perfect compliment to an antique doll.

For more details on this small sewing case just click here The offerings are many so hope it spark your creative imagination.
