Do you remember cooking and baking with your mother? She teaching you the art of baking those special cookies perhaps? Following the recipe & measuring the ingredients correctly. Rolling of the dough if cut out cookies were to be made. Each shape placed carefully on the cookie sheet for baking. Of course, the best part was the decorating of the cookies after they were baked. Oh, what fun!

Now, on those special baking days, sometimes there was special attire worn such as these lovely mother and daughter matching aprons. What little girl wouldn't like to be dressed just like her mother. And what mother wouldn't have liked her daughter to feel very special. I am sure the mother and daughter that wore these aprons held a very dear bond.

The aprons are home sewn & hand embroidered dating from the 1930's but were a purchased stamped & tinted fabric pattern from companies such as Vogart. The homemaker would then embroidery, cut & sew the pieces of the garment together.

Aprons were so a part of daily life from ones worn for doing household chores to fancy ones for serving teas or Sunday dinners.

Want to purchase an apron for a collection or to give to a special person? Or maybe to wear for a special occasion? Please visit my store for a selection of aprons from many different eras.

Ghost and goblins, black cats & jack-o-lanterns! Scary things that go bump in the night! Halloween, the night to scare or to be scared!

My childhood memories of Halloween were always exciting ~ of waiting until that bewitching hour of darkness to dress in a "put together costume" from the closet of our mom & dad . Along with my sister we would join a group of friends & merrily be on our way to gather a pillowcase full of treats. Here and there we would meet another group of Halloween revelers exchanging comments and guesses of who each were under the wraps of those disguises. Many of our friends we guessed right away but others were not too revealing. At the end we would return home to dump our loot, to count how many candy bars, lollipops, homemade Carmel popcorn balls, and other assorted treats we had. Tired we snuggled down into our beds and as we drifted off to sleep all spooky images of Halloween slipped off into the night.

Vintage era Halloween costumes are fun to collect as many early ones are handmade usually fashioned without a pattern. Most are simple but others quite intriguing as to the construction of the garment. An adult Victorian costume is always a treat to find and there are times a costume from this era does become available. Not long ago I seen a costume in orange fabric of a flowing gown in long sleeves. The headgear to this costume certainly set this costume apart. The headgear affair was the shape of a bonnet of orange fabric. Tied under the chin with black ties & had wire pointed ears to resemble a cat. This costume did take some creative imagination and fashioning!

The sweet little child's costume I have shown here is from the 1930's - 1940's. It is machine sewn with pasted witches & cats of brown (not black) to the cloth skirt. Possibly from a costume pattern but more than likely fashioned from a little girl's regular dress pattern.

Please enjoy!

I'm off to the Heart of Country Antique Show in Nashville, Tn. this week. It is always an exciting place to shop especially in the fall of the year. Usually the weather is beautiful & the scenery sparks the fall hint of color.

The show lends itself to a flavor of fall, too. Pumpkins, mums and bittersweet add to this touch. However, the best is the wonderful array of merchandise offered by the dealers . Dealers from all parts of the country bringing their best and finest from furniture to smalls. Always something wonderful waiting for that ultimate buyer.

Of course, I will be eager to share with you upon my return some photos of my findings in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime here is a wonderful example of one of my past purchases.

This applique & embroidered quilt dates from the 1930-40's . Handstitched & hand embroidered in a pretty pattern of spring daffodils in swan vases. This quilt is quite a prize. For more wonderful offerings please visit my Ebay store The Gatherings Antique Vintage for all your shopping needs.

Another sweet little treasure handmade from the Victorian / early 1900's era. I had mentioned in one of my previous post my love of handmade cloth sewing articles, well here is another delightful handmade piece. The top & bottom egg shaped pieces are cut from cardboard covered in silk ribbon . A narrow ribbon laces down through the center of the spool of the first and then back up through the second spool continuing to the end spool. The thread is held just tight enough inside the "case" but still allowing the spool to turn to unwind the thread. A creative piece probably given as a gift as it is in unused condition.

This lovely handmade Italian Point Venice tablecloth is so beautiful that I wanted to share this lovely creation with you. Imagine the beauty of this cloth gracing a Victorian / Edwardian dining room table in the early 1900's. Ah yes, it had to be a true focal point as the quality of the piece speaks for itself. The cloth measures 72" x 104" and features angelic figures. Towards the center of the cloth there are eleven entwining circles with the outer ones of figures & inner of flora. Each of these circles measures 17" in diameter. There are 5 figures on the border of each of the long sides and 3 on the short sides. These figures are holding Grecian urns. Each of these figures measure 10-3/4". The entire tablecloth is very intricate & the work, I think, quite nice.

And yet another close-up photo.

Beautiful linens such as this tablecloth are lovely treasures from the past to appreciate today. If you are a collector a piece such as this would make a fine addition to a collection. Treasures from the past also make lovely gifts as many are unique and one of a kind. If you are looking for gift giving ideas please visit my Store .

A lovely hand English Branscombe needlelace tablecloth from the early part of the 1900's or possibly late Victorian. All things about this lovely cloth suggest Battenburg except for the nubby edge which is a trademark for English Branscombe. An elaborate fine needle work pattern covers most of the linen cloth with the cloth measuring 37" x 38". Center area measures 17" square with the outer border measuring 7 to 12" in width.
